Do you have a captive or farmed deer?

The authority for regulating captive or farmed deer has been transferred from the Pennsylvania Game Commission to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. If you have one or more deer behind a fence, you need to have a Cervid Livestock Operators License from the Department of Agriculture. If the deer are of the following species; White-tailed, Black-tailed, Elk, Sika, Mule Deer, Red Deer, Moose or hybrids of these, then you also need to be enrolled in either the Chronic Wasting Disease Herd Certification Program or the Herd Monitoring Program. The deadline for registering for these programs is March 1st, 2007, so don’t delay. Please contact Mary Martin at 717-783-5309 for applications and additional information.

Brucellosis Update

On January 26, 2007, Pennsylvania decided to make the brucellosis requirements for certification and testing equal to that of Tuberculosis. The testing requirements are: Two whole herd tests on animals 12 months of age and older, 9-15 months apart for certification and retest every three years.
