Upon further review by the PA Department of Agricultures legal department it's become necessary to implement a few changes to my previous post - "Official clarification on the PA Taxidermy License".
Everyone should of received or will be receiving in the mail an Application & Taxidermists User's Guide from the PA Department of Agriculture.
1st - the application states "Application For Taxidermy Permit" this should have read "Application for Taxidermy License" --- this was an inadvertent mistake from the PDA. The next printing of the applications will be corrected to read "Application for Taxidermy LICENSE" (Reference Act 77 of 2006 - HB1528 - ""An Act amending Titles 3 (Agriculture) and 34 (Game) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, PROVIDING FOR TAXIDERMISTS; AND further providing for licenses and fees relating to taxidermists."")
2nd - You must complete the application and include the $100 license fee in order for the PA Department of Agriculture to issue your new license.
3rd - Multiple year PGC Permit holders cannot be honored by PDA. If you hold a PGC permit that expires after June 30, 2007 (ex: 6-30-08, 6-30-09, etc.) you will need to contact the PGC for a refund of additional years paid.
4th - The PDA is allowing taxidermists to purchase multi year taxidermy licenses.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact myself or Melissa McHale w/PDA at 717-783-5309 or mmchale@state.pa.us
Now, for a further explanation of the changes. The 2nd statement was changed from the previous post because the law doesn't allow for any grandfathering provisions. Therefore the PDA cannot honor a permit issued from the PGC. The same holds true for the change to the 3rd statement. The PDA cannot honor multiple year PGC permit holders. The final change is the contact person for the PDA. Melissa McHale will be handling the taxidermy license end of things at PDA. Mary Martin will be working with her during this transition period.
When you send in the application w/fee your license will be issued - it is valid for 1 year from the date of issue. In the top left hand corner of your license is the expiration date. This is different than what taxidermists were used to with the PGC permit - running from July 1 to June 30. The PDA will issue renewals.
Another question I've been asked several times is concerning apprentices, employees, shop help, etc. - Previously with the PGC permit the taxidermist was required to list these people on their permit. This is not the case with the PDA Taxidermy License. The Taxidermy License is issued to an individual taxidermist and his/her business address. A taxidermist can have people working for or with him/her as long as the work is preformed at the same business address that is listed on the Taxidermy License. The person holding the Taxidermy License is ultimately responsible for any work performed at that business address.

Dan Snyder
