George,
If your birds and animals were mounted correctly you should not have to worry about insects.
A general rule would be to keep them in a dry area. Basements where moisture can be present are a bad idea. If you are having a problem now with insects it is due to poor prep work, meaning the skins were not cleaned of ALL meat and membrane. This is what the bugs are after. If they are cleaned an tanned correctly you should not have a problem.
