Rabid Cat

RABIES ALERT!
Rabid Cat in Oil City, Venango County

September 18, 2007

Please be advised that a CAT found at the south end of Route 8 in Oil City, Venango County tested positive for rabies. This was a feral cat that attacked a gentleman as he was entering his place of employment on the morning of September 15, 2007. The cat ran at him and bit and scratched him on the knee. The cat then chased two other people and attacked a police cruiser before it was put down by the police. There was one person exposed to this cat and that person is receiving post exposure prophylaxis. No animals were known to have been exposed to this cat.

Pennsylvania law requires that all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older are rabies vaccinated and that booster vaccinations are administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity. Rabies vaccine is also available for other species.

As it is not possible to determine if this cat may have exposed other wild or domestic animals, please consult your private veterinary practitioner to determine your animal's needs. This is of great importance, as you need to assure that your pet is not a potential source of rabies for your family and neighbors.

If you have any additional questions regarding this incident, please contact Dr. Karen F. Martin, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (814-332-6890).
